FAQ’S:

What is the All-Star Program ?

The All-Star Program stands in fairly stark contrast to our regular season program.

All-Star play is meant to be a fairly challenging experience for kids who wish to engage in tournament play against competitive teams from out of town.  Our main tournament experience is the Cal Ripken District & State Tournament play, in which Cal Ripken teams from all over Massachusetts participate.   In addition, MYBA usually enters 3-4 additional tournaments during the Summer All-Star season.

All-Star tournaments are typically organized by age-grouped teams. Accordingly, it's typically our league's plan (subject to sufficient numbers of interested kids and available coaches)
to assemble four “A” all-star teams: a 12, 11, 10 & 9U team.

In addition, MYBA strives to assemble four “B” all-star teams at the same age groups (subject to sufficient numbers and coach candidates) who would participate in The Marlborough MIST Summer Invitational League (games are only held Friday – Sundays thru August).

Does My Child Have to Show Up at All Three Evaluation Sessions ?

It is strongly encouraged to make all sessions if at all possible.

How much of a Time Commitment Can I Expect ? Can I take a Summer Vacation ?

Schedule is contingent on success of team: More You Win, Further You Advance in All Tournaments, More Games you play. Typically, the “A” team’s season begins in late June and ends very early August. The MIST “B” team begins in late June and runs thru end of August.

Yes, you can take vacation. However, it is highly encouraged that “A” team players attempt to defer your vacation until after District & State Tournaments are held in early to mid-July. Some prefer to defer their plans until August. Players absence for vacation during District and State Tournaments may be taken into consideration when final rosters are approved by the Board of Directors.

Also, each Team will be assigned one night a week where they are expected to staff the shack all summer: “A” Teams Monday – Thursday, “B” Teams Friday – Sunday.

Both of us work full-time, how difficult will it be to get my child to the Games/Practices ?

All managers strive to set up a carpool system in such cases. “No man is left behind”
(You will see your team begins to become its own family as season wears on, very fun)

What are the Costs We Can Expect ?

The registration cost is likely to be $160 in 2010 to cover essential costs: Insurance, Equipment, Uniforms and miscellaneous costs including tournament entry fees, etc. (Please contact us if your family is suffering a financial hardship, no child will be denied an opportunity if selected)

VERY rare hotel costs do pop up if the team advances in particular tournaments.
This might occur 1-2 times during a very successful season - again, very rare.
(Each team will attempt to do some fundraising to help cover some costs as well).

What about the Canada Trip?

MYBA has a long standing tradition of competing in a tournament in Nova Scotia over Labor Day weekend.  For the past few years, both 12A and 12B teams have competed in the tournament.  Substantial fundraising is required in order to cover the costs of transportation to Canada.  Last year, MYBA started a fundraising program to give teams a head start on fundraising by age group.  This effort will go a long way toward the goal of each team.  Everyone who goes on this trip has found it to be an extremely rewarding experience that thier children never forget.  MYBA will continue this tradition in 2010 and beyond if at all possible.  It is expected that all players and parents will make the commitment to this trip.  If necessary (a significant number of players can't make the trip) the Board of Directors will fill roster spots in order to send 2 teams to this tournament.
